Breaking News: Winston-Salem Firefighter Injured as Fire Truck Overturns on Black Ice While Responding to Crash

December 4 , 2024

Winston Salem, North Carolina — December 3, 2024 — According to WXII 12 and the Winston-Salem Fire Department, a firefighter sustained injuries early Tuesday morning when a fire truck overturned after encountering black ice.

The incident occurred as Ladder 19 was en route to respond to a separate crash on Glenn Hi Road. Assistant Chief Andrew Gray explained that the fire truck hit a patch of black ice, which caused its front tire to slip off the roadway. The truck overturned, resting on its driver’s side in a nearby field.

In addition to the rollover, the fire truck collided with utility wires, dislodging a transformer and leaving some homes without power. Duke Energy crews later replaced the damaged utility pole and restored power to the affected residents.

Gray expressed gratitude to the witnesses who stopped to assist firefighters trapped in the overturned truck.

“After the accident, several bystanders pulled over to help. They worked to get our crew out through windows and the windshield. I deeply appreciate their efforts and willingness to lend a hand,” said Gray.

He also emphasized the dangers of black ice, urging caution during winter driving conditions.

“Black ice is deceptive and incredibly dangerous. Even when roads seem dry, it’s essential to stay vigilant and avoid complacency to prevent accidents like this,” Gray noted.

The Winston-Salem Fire Department reminds the public to drive cautiously, especially during hazardous weather.

Gray also reported that the injured firefighter is on the mend and recovering well.

Meanwhile, maintenance teams are evaluating the fire truck to determine whether it can be repaired or will need to be replaced.
