Breaking News: Man Killed in Hit-and-Run on I-40 East in Johnston County; Authorities Seek Driver

Johnston County, North Carolina — November 29, 2024 — According to ABC 11, state troopers are investigating a fatal hit-and-run on Interstate 40 East and are actively searching for the driver involved.

The North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) responded to the tragic incident Friday morning near the Rest Area and Exit 325 on I-40 East. According to officials, the suspect’s vehicle veered off the roadway, entered the grassy median, and struck 38-year-old Ryan Shyllon Opher, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver failed to stop and fled the area following the collision.

Troopers have identified the suspect’s vehicle as a Nissan Rogue based on evidence at the crash site. Authorities noted the car would have significant damage to its left front bumper and headlight area.

“Our thoughts are with the family, friends, and loved ones of Ryan Shyllon Opher during this incredibly difficult time,” a statement read.

Law enforcement officials are urging anyone with information about the incident to contact the NCSHP at 919-934-2186.
