Breaking News: Fatal Head-On Collision Under Investigation on Allens Creek Road
April 13 , 2025Waynesville, North Carolina — April 12, 2025 — According to The Mountaineer, authorities are investigating a deadly head-on collision on Allens Creek Road near the intersection of Camp Branch Road.
The crash happened around Allens Creek Baptist Church and involved two pickup trucks—a Chevrolet and a Ford F-150. According to Lt. Billy Benhart of the Waynesville Police Department, one of the vehicles unexpectedly crossed the center line, resulting in a violent collision with the oncoming truck.
When emergency personnel arrived, both vehicles remained interlocked in the roadway. A nurse who happened to be on the scene reported that the driver of the Chevrolet—later identified as 61-year-old Jerry Wood of Waynesville—was unresponsive and had no detectable pulse. Emergency medical services initiated life-saving efforts upon arrival and transported Wood to Mission Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The driver of the Ford F-150 sustained injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening and was able to walk away from the crash, Lt. Benhart confirmed. Eyewitnesses told police they saw the Chevrolet veer over the double yellow lines moments before impact. Despite an attempt by the F-150 driver to avoid the collision, the crash was unavoidable.
Although the driver who may have caused the collision lost his life, the Waynesville Police Department is continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash. Lt. Benhart noted that speed did not appear to be a contributing factor, as both vehicles were traveling below the posted speed limit at the time of the incident. While Allens Creek Road is known for frequent complaints about speeding, serious crashes are relatively rare in that area.
“We don’t typically see many collisions on that stretch,” Benhart said. “There are often concerns about speeding, but actual accidents are uncommon.”
