The devastating news reached Lupton when she learned that Tucker had been struck by a wrong-way driver, identified by Durham Police as Nathane Blackmon, on North Roxboro Street.

Lupton’s first concern was for Tucker’s adopted son, Joey, who has Down syndrome and was also in the vehicle during the crash. Joey is currently recovering from his injuries.

“They were inseparable,” Lupton said. “Joey’s tender nature reflected the love and care he had received from Dawn. He was her world, and their bond was undeniable.”

The tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the Durham Public School District, leaving many educators mourning the death of their esteemed colleague.

“All the teachers knew Ms. Tucker,” Lupton said. “When I shared the news with former colleagues, the response was unanimous—everyone was devastated.”

The driver, Nathane Blackmon, faces charges including Driving While Impaired (DWI), Left of Center, and Failure to Wear a Seatbelt. Due to injuries sustained in the crash, Blackmon was not immediately taken into custody. Police have indicated that additional charges are likely as the investigation continues.
