Breaking News: Williamston Mother Killed in Beaufort County Crash, Driver Arrested for DUI
April 5 , 2024Beaufort County, North Carolina — April 3, 2024 — According to WITN, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol has confirmed a vehicle collision that killed a mother and injured her child shut down Highway 17 for hours late Wednesday night.
The Highway Patrol says troopers were called to a fatal collision on Highway 17, just south of the Martin County line, around 11:10 p.m. The North Carolina State Department of Transportation says Highway 17 outside Washington, near West Bear Grass Road, was closed for at least four hours.
Trooper Rico Stephens says 28-year-old Izair Perez, of Washington, was traveling south on Highway 17 in a Dodge Journey when he crossed over the centerline, hitting Janie James’s Honda CRV with her daughter inside. Perez suffered minor injuries and was treated and released from ECU Health Beaufort Hospital, according to Highway Patrol.
James, 44, of Williamston, died at the scene, according to officials. Troopers say her 10-year-old daughter only suffered minor injuries.
Trooper Stephens says Perez was arrested for driving under the influence and more felony charges are expected after a consultation with the district attorney’s office.
