Breaking News: Motorcyclist Killed After Driver Runs Stop Sign in Charlotte
August 19 , 2024Charlotte, North Carolina — August 18, 2024 — According to Queen City News and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, a person has been charged after running a stop sign and hitting a motorcyclist who died in north Charlotte.
Officers responded to the 6500 block of Old Statesville Road about a crash involving two vehicles. When they arrived, they saw a 2016 Mercedez Benz GLE 350 with heavy front-end damage and a damaged 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle.
The motorcyclist, 47-year-old Dennis Paul Koch, was transported to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries.
Investigators believe the Mercedez Benz failed to stop at a stop sign and drove into Koch’s path which ejected him and a passenger from the motorcycle. According to Medic, that person was also transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the Mercedez, 44-year-old Vernetta Laverne Beatty-Cyprian, stayed at the scene during the investigation. She was later booked into the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office with misdemeanor death by vehicle.
Police say speed and impairment are not believed to have been factors in the collision, which remains under investigation. Anyone with information should contact Detective Worthy at 704-432-2169, Ext. 4, or Charlotte Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
