Your Friday Thought For The Day
February 4 , 2016Your Friday Thought For The Day:
Did you know that musculoskeletal injuries are common among healthcare workers? Wherever there are patients, there are opportunities to become injured in the course of care. According to Medscape.com, nurses, nurses’ aides, orderlies, and attendants suffer these injuries at a rate much higher than the general population of workers, even those in construction, mining, and manufacturing. Transferring patients from bed to chair and repositioning in bed are blamed for most of the sprains and strains to the neck, shoulders, and lower back. Bathing and pushing wheelchairs and gurneys also contribute to injuries. The problem is made worse by the aging and increasingly overweight patient population. Unfortunately, no federal law exists to require employers to provide proper equipment to handle patients, although the Nurse and Health Care Worker Protection Act of 2015 has been introduced and is awaiting passage.
