Breaking News: CMPD Officer Recovering After Early-Morning Head-On Collision in East Charlotte
April 3 , 2025Charlotte, North Carolina — April 2, 2025 — According to WSOC-TV 9, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer is now recovering at home after being injured in a head-on collision during the early hours of Wednesday morning in east Charlotte.
The crash occurred just before 2 a.m. on Winterfield Place, a residential street near Albemarle Road. According to police, the officer attempted to stop a vehicle displaying a fake license plate when the driver fled, without headlights, leading to the collision.
Nearby resident PJ Coyne described the chaotic moment: “I heard a loud bang, looked out the window, and saw a silver sedan sitting in a neighbor’s yard.”
Channel 9’s Eli Brand reported that debris from the crash and vehicle parts were still scattered on the roadway hours later.
Coyne said police arrived within seconds of the crash. “Two more units came speeding down the road right after it happened,” he recalled.
Responding officers quickly turned their attention to the sedan’s driver. “We heard them yelling at the person to get out of the car,” Coyne said. “They got him out, cuffed him, and we saw an officer lying on the ground as paramedics arrived.”
The officer was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation and treatment. Fortunately, CMPD later confirmed that the officer was released and is continuing to recover at home.
The suspect was taken into custody at the scene. After crime scene investigators finished collecting evidence, both vehicles were eventually towed away.
“It was definitely shocking,” Coyne said. “This kind of thing doesn’t happen around here.”
CMPD has not yet released additional details regarding the suspect’s charges or the officer’s identity.
