Charlotte, North Carolina — December 18, 2024 — According to WCNC, A tragic workplace accident claimed the life of an employee at Siemens Energy’s southwest Charlotte production site. The incident occurred at the company’s facility on Westinghouse Boulevard, where emergency responders were called around 5 p.m.

The worker, identified as 27-year-old Robert Anthony Mediate, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. According to an anonymous colleague, Mediate had been operating the machinery involved in the incident for approximately six months. Witness accounts suggest that multiple employees were present and witnessed the devastating event.

Siemens Energy released a statement expressing their sorrow and confirming an active investigation by local authorities: “We are deeply saddened by the loss of a valued member of the Siemens Energy family at our Charlotte, NC facility on the evening of December 18, 2024. We are working closely with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and remain in contact with the employee’s family during this difficult time.”

The North Carolina Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Division has also been notified and is investigating the incident’s circumstances independently.

Siemens Energy, a global leader in energy technology, has maintained operations in Charlotte since the late 1960s. The facility specializes in manufacturing power transformers and other advanced technologies. The company announced plans to expand its Charlotte operations earlier this year after securing a state job development grant. The expansion marks the establishment of the first transformer manufacturing facility in the United States.

With a workforce of hundreds in Charlotte and operations spanning over 90 countries, Siemens Energy is a significant player in the energy sector. The company emphasized its commitment to supporting its employees and the investigation as it worked to uncover the cause of the tragedy.

Further details about the incident and its investigation have not yet been released.
