Why Construction Work Can Lead to Life-Changing Injuries
June 29 , 2023Life-Changing Construction Work Injuries
At the Ramsay Law Firm, P.A., our Charlotte workers’ compensation attorneys know construction industry workers face some of the greatest risks for injuries on the job.
According to The Center for Construction Research and Training (CPRW), construction workers have a higher risk of both fatal and non-fatal traumatic brain injuries (TBI) compared to all other industries in the U.S. The CPRW reported, over a ten-year period, a total of 2,210 construction workers died due to traumatic brain injuries, representing 25% of all construction fatalities.
What’s more, those who survive these significant injuries often struggle with adapting to the life-changing physical functions, thinking abilities, behaviors, and more that result from a TBI.
What are the Different Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries?
Traumatic brain injuries affect all sufferers differently, based on their severity and the physical location of the injury. However, according to the International Brain Injury Association, of all types of injury, those to the brain are among the most likely to result in death or permanent disability.
In North Carolina and across the country, medical professionals, researchers, and scientists recognize three types of traumatic brain injuries:
- Mild TBI or concussion.
- Moderate TBI.
- Severe TBI.
A mild TBI or concussion is caused by:
- A bump, blow, or jolt to the head.
- A hit to the body that causes the head and brain to move quickly back and forth.
This sudden movement can cause:
- Chemical changes in the brain.
- The brain bounces around or twists in the skull.
- Stretching and damaging brain cells.
These changes in the brain lead to symptoms that may affect how a person thinks, learns, feels, acts, and sleeps.
A moderate or severe TBI is caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head or by a penetrating injury. For those who survive, moderate or severe TBI may lead to long-term or life-long health problems that may affect all aspects of a person’s life. These health problems have been described as having similar effects to chronic diseases.
