How the FAA Reauthorization Bill Impacts Flight Attendants Throughout the U.S.

February 28 , 2023

At the Ramsay Law Firm, P.A., our Charlotte workers’ compensation attorneys have represented injured workers for over 25 years, including North Carolina flight attendants who have been hurt at work.

We understand that a workplace accident means something different for each of our clients. For those in the Association of Flight Attendants and Association of Professional Flight Attendants, injuries can leave them grounded from maintaining their livelihoods going forward.

To help curb foreseeable circumstances where flight attendants can suffer injuries, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Reauthorization Bill was signed into law on October 5, 2018, and extended FAA’s funding and authorities through Fiscal Year 2023.

Here is what is included in the bill.

What Does the FAA Reauthorization Act Mean for U.S. Flight Attendant Safety?

While the entirety of the Act is expansive, and covers everything from airport rule changes and drug testing protocols to updating emergency evacuation standards and requiring children under the age of two to have a ticket and seat of their own, it also includes important legislative changes related to increasing the safety of flight attendants throughout the U.S.

After several years of enforcing mask and behavior policies related to COVID-19, flight attendants have suffered significant physical, verbal, and emotional abuse from disruptive passengers.

The Act established access to a health and wellness fund from fines collected from disruptive passengers that allows flight attendants who have been assaulted to offset their medical, counseling, and therapy costs, as well as provide paid time off to give depositions or testify in court against the passenger(s) who caused their harm.

In addition, the bill aims to improve cabin air quality, and temperature consistency, and to warn flight attendants of the consistent risk of radiation exposure when flying at high altitudes.

At the Ramsay Law Firm, our North Carolina workers’ compensation lawyers for flight attendants know these hard-working men and women are subjected to dangerous conditions that other industries do not face. Whether it is defective airplane equipment, emergency landings, plane crashes, abusive passengers, or dangerous conditions at airports, flight attendants can suffer injuries or fatalities that are completely out of their hands.

When they do, we want to help them pursue the workers’ compensation coverage they are entitled to for their complete damages.
