Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Report of the National Commission of the State Workmen’s Compensation Laws
February 15 , 2022At the Ramsay Law Firm, P.A., our Charlotte workers’ compensation attorneys are proud members of the Workers’ Injury Law & Advocacy Group, (WILG), which is dedicated to advancing a just and fair workers’ compensation system for victims of occupational injury or disease.
As WILG members, our workers’ compensation lawyers in Mecklenburg County will be collaborating with other professionals in North Carolina and across the nation to help commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the National Commission on State Workmen’s Compensation Laws.
The group acts principally through education, communication, and data gathering to ensure our clients have access to the latest and most relevant workers’ compensation information, especially if their workplace injury affects their livelihoods.
Here is how the National Commission on State Workmen’s Compensation Laws helped shape our North Carolina Workers’ Compensation Act.
National Commission on State Workmen’s Compensation 50th Anniversary
Nearly fifty years after the first state workers’ compensation laws were passed, the National Commission on State Workmen’s Compensation delivered its report outlining 84 recommendations, 19 of which were deemed “essential,” to President Nixon and Congress.
The U.S. Department of Labor lists that the National Commission agreed on five basic objectives for workers’ compensation programs:
- Broad coverage of employees and work-related injuries and diseases
- Provision of sufficient medical care and rehabilitation services
- Substantial protection against interruption of income
- Encouragement of safety
- An effective system for delivery of the benefits and services
The report led to reform across the country and increased protections for injured workers.
The 50th anniversary of the National Commission on State Workmen’s Compensation Laws allows our Charlotte workers’ compensation attorneys to celebrate the collaboration with other industry professionals to measure the immediate, midterm, and long-term effects of the Recommendations as adopted by the various state and federal jurisdictions.
It also allows the Ramsay Law Firm to examine how further change may be necessary to accomplish the Commission’s goals of providing an adequate, affordable, prompt, and equitable system of workers’ compensation.
